Cadence Head
More

Adopted 12/22/12!

Cadence

Cadence is a handsome, black and red 1.5-2 year old male weighing in at about 75 lbs. He was an unclaimed stray from a Sacramento area shelter, so nothing is known of his background.

Cadence is learning to get along in his foster home, at first he was a little unsure of meeting new dogs, but usually given a proper introduction, and a couple minutes to warm up, he does fine. He enjoys playing with both the less dominant males and females dogs in his foster home, although will challenge another dominant male. Cadence should probably be the only male dog in his home. Once he gets to know you, Cadence loves getting attention and being around his people, and so far has been good with adults and older well-behaved children. He is probably too intense for small children.

NO CATS OR SMALL FURRY CRITTERS.

Sofie
More

Adopted 12/22/12!

Sofie

Sofie is a small black and red 9 month old female who will most likely not be bigger than 55 lbs. She was an unclaimed stray from Sacramento City Shelter.

Sofie may be pint sized but she has a big girl bark and is not afraid to voice her opinion. She is very active and would benefit from an active family willing to walk or run her a couple of times a day. Sofie loves playing with her toys, but has to be watched to ensure she is not chewing for a squeaker. She loves water, car rides, exploring the house and trying to entice her foster siblings to play. She is extremely smart; quickly learned her routine and has tried to open doors. She corrects easily and walks nicely on the leash. She is 90% housebroken and fully crate trained. She is learning sit, down, come and to wait for her food.

This is a Level 2 Dog. Please be sure you understand what this level of dog requires.

Arwen Head
More

Adopted 12/15/12!

Arwen

Arwen is a 5 month old female German Shepherd mix puppy, possibly mixed with Anatolian Shepherd. She was an unclaimed stray from Modesto, so we know nothing of her background. She has huge paws and looks like she is going to be a fairly big girl, and has a determined streak, also much like an Anatolian.

Typical of puppies, she loves to play rough and tumble with the bigger dogs in her foster home. She is very curious and outgoing, and does well with dog-savvy cats. She loves the water and takes advantage of any sort even if it's just a water bowl or an ice cube.

CarlaHead
More

Adopted 12/1/12!

Carla

Carla came into our program several years ago as an unclaimed stray. She was adopted out and recently returned when her owner lost her home.

Allegedly seven years old, Carla is still in her prime. She is very alert, full of energy and drive, and quite fit, with ample shoulders and chest. Sweet and affectionate, she will be happy to please you if you give her good leadership. But you must have her respect or she'll keep pushing, doing things her way!

Quick both physically and mentally, Carla learns quickly and is thriving on having structure in her foster home. She is comfortable in the house and out, is crate trained and housebroken, and knows basic commands. Though she pretends not to understand “heel,” she knows how to walk on lead.

NO CATS, SMALL DOGS OR CRITTERS!

Maximus is a good alarm barker.

Atlas Head
More

Adopted 11/24/12!

Atlas

Atlas is a large, handsome boy around 5 years old who weighs in at about 100 pounds. His airplane ears give him a happy- go-lucky appearance. He was turned into a local shelter for chasing livestock. While taking walks with his foster family he only seems to have mild interest in cows, sheep and goats, but does have quite a bit of interest in the resident outdoor cat, so no small, furry critters for this fellow.

This nice boy has gotten along with every person or large dog he has met so far, playing nicely with both the male and female dogs in his foster home. He wants no part of trouble, and does his best to avoid any troublesome situation.

Juniper Head
More

Adopted 11/24/12!

Juniper

Juniper is an approximately two year old female who was turned in to a Placer County Shelter by her owner "because she attacked a small dog." At the shelter she was reactive to other dogs while she was in her kennel, but now in a foster home, after a proper introduction, she plays with all the male dogs her size and larger appropriately.

Juniper is very sweet and friendly with every person she has met thus far, and will roll over and give her belly to just about anyone. She is pretty good at settling in the house in the evenings. She seems to know Sit and Down, and walks on the leash pretty well, but she does still jump up. She enjoys "swimming" in the her plastic bably pool. Juniper sleeps quietly in her crate all night, is housebroken, and she enjoys riding in the car, and will jump right in to go with you.

NO CATS, SMALL DOGS or CRITTERS.

Natasha

Natasha is a sweet and pretty 3 year old female weighing about 60 lbs. She was owner surrendered to a Sacramento shelter.

So far, she appears to be house-broken, successfully using an open door to go outside. She is friendly toward people, loves walks and car rides. A very affectionate girl, she will give little kisses, likes her pets, and will quickly roll over for a nice belly rub. She loves being with her people and is a little shadow in the house.

Tesla
More

Adopted 11/24/12!

Tesla

Tesla is a 7-8 month old petite female who was an unclaimed stray from the Modesto Shelter. She is very sweet, and has moderate puppy energy. She is social with people and other dogs, and is currently in a foster home with 7-10 other dogs. She does not appear to have high prey drive and is more interested in walking beside her person, than adventuring off in the field with the other dogs.

Tesla will likely need surgery on at least one of her hips, and assistance is available through the rescue to any prospective adopter.

Tesla appears to be housebroken, and crate trained. She enjoys car rides, but can get carsick at times.

Usa Head
More

Adopted 11/24/12!

Usa

USA (pronounced ooo-sa) is a 8-9 month old female shepherd/husky, with maybe some cattle dog in her, with one blue eye and one brown eye. Her name was chosen to keep up with the patriotic theme for the month of July. She was turned in by a family who lived in an apartment and was not allowed to keep her. Although she is not all shepherd, she was brought into the program when she ran out of time at a local Sacramento shelter.

USA is affectionate and playful. She enjoys playing with the water, rolling in the grass, playing with toys and having a nylabone. Anyone that gets close, will likely get kisses. She pays no attention to the cats in the foster home and has learned to respect and back away from the big shepherds. She slept through the night in a crate. We are working on housebreaking and house manners, and she is being taught to not guard her toys and food bowl. Because of her guarding tendency, she should not go to a home with small children.

Because of her guarding issues, this is a Level 3 Dog. Please be sure you understand what a dog with this Level requires.

Boone Head
More

Adopted 11/17/12!

Boone

Boone is a one year old, 80 pound, young male who was an unclaimed stray from Modesto Shelter. He is medium energy level, not overly clingy, but appropriately affectionate. He has been friendly with everyone he has met thus far, and shows a lot of interest in playing with other dogs.

He knows sit, but needs more work on his leash and basic manners. He went directly into a crate when loaded in a vehicle, and readily jumped up in the bed of a truck. He takes correction without resentment, and defaults to a down when given a stern correction with the leash.

Harry Head

Adopted 11/17/12!

Harry

Harry is a handsome, 5 month old male, black and tan German Shepherd, Malinois, or cross, you decide. He was surrendered to a Sacramento area shelter when his owners left him outside byhimself 24/7 and he became a little distructive.

Harry is a fun loving, eady going little guy, happy to meet anyone and everyone. He has liked every human, dog or cat he has come in contact with so far (not so sure about the neighbor's cow.) While he has not been exposed to the big world out there much, as he is, he is taking it all in stride. Happy to do what you want him to, once he figures out what it is.

Lager Head
More

Adopted 11/17/12!

Lager

Lager is one of a litter of 6 puppies that were born on July 3, 2012. While they look pretty shepherdish, it is not truly known who the sire is (but it is suspected that he was a German Shepherd that frequently roamed the neighborhood).

At approximately 9 weeks old, this little guy is a tough guy and lovebug all rolled into one. He will let you flip him over and rub his belly, but is just as happy to rough and tumble with his littermates. He is one of the larger puppies in the litter, and his ears just decided they would stand up (only time will tell if they will stay that way.)

He is pretty curious about the outdoor cat at his foster home. He creeps up to sniff the cat then barks when he is hissed at. This little guy isn't housebroken yet, but is smart as a whip, and will learn soon.

Please note pictures taken at 9 weeks, he will not look like this for very long!

Mylar Head

Adopted 11/17/12!

Mylar

Mylar is a handsome, 5 month old male, white German Shepherd. He was surrendered to our group by a vet when his previous owner could not afford to have him treated after he was run over by a car.

Mylar now has metal plates in his pelvis and leg, but he doesn't let it slow him down. His new family should not allow hard, pounding exercise as his back end is still a little fragile, but he should be as good as new once he's healed.

While a little shy at first, this sweet boy gets along well with other dogs and is learning to get along with cats. He's almost housebroken, and definitely ready to steal your heart.

Oz

Oz is a 10-11 month old, handsome black and tan boy. While a little underweight now, he will grow into a big boy.  Oz was turned in to a Sacramento Area Shelter by his owner when they decided they had too many animals.

In his previous life, Oz was an outdoor only dog, so everything is new indoors at his foster home.  He is mesmerized by ceiling fans, is not real sure what is going to happen when the dishwasher door opens, and is just now mastering the dreaded stairs.  It is both comical and a joy to watch him experience everything for the first time.  He is almost housebroken.

Mabel Head

Adopted 11/3/12!

Mabel

Mabel is a 2-3 year old, classic black and tan girl, who was a very pregnant unclaimed stray at the Modesto pound back in November of 2011. She soon delivered a litter of puppies (Dana, Penny Lane, Tina, Zip) that turned out to be purebred German Shepherds, all in their new homes already!

This pretty girl is very affectionate and playful with her people. Mabel gets along well with other dogs in the household and is good with cats. She was apparently used as a brood bitch, as she doesn't have much experience out and about in the world and needs to catch up on her social skills with other dogs and people. She's a perfect House Princess at home, but she can get anxious and reactive when taken out in public.

Tia is a large, 3 year old, dark black and tan girl rescued from Sacramento pound. She is a former brood bitch, and seems happy to give up puppy-raising to take on the challenge of living the good life. She's a love first and foremost, willing to accept attention whenever it's available.

Tia does okay so far with other dogs both male and female, although she does have an alpha streak in her. Once everyone has sorted out who's who, she's a contented pack member. She has had no reaction to little dogs, cats, or even small kids so far. She's housetrained and is learning how to Sit, Stay, and Stay Off The Couch.

Drake

SPECIAL NEEDS

Drake is a handsome, large, 85 pound, black and tan 3 year old male. He was an owner surrender when his family lost their home. He loves getting attention and being around his people. His most recent family rescued him from a neighbor who had him tied outside. Given his rough start, Drake is very loving and friendly to everyone he meets, but could use consistent socialization.

Drake has recently been diagnosed with epilepsy. His regimen is one pill twice a day, and the medication is fairly inexpensive. He has not had a seizure since the medication was dosed properly. All of his follow-up blood work looks great. The vets hae told us if Drake is on consistent medication, he may only have two to three seizures a year, if that.

Kurjak

Kurjak is a large, 8-10 month old boy rescued from the Oakdale shelter. His former family turned him in simply because he wasn't a tiny puppy anymore. He is already almost 90 lbs and still filling out.

This big boy needs a family that can continue socializing him properly and can handle his stubborn streak. He walks nicely on a leash so far and is learning to load into the car, but will be a typical bratty teenager if left behind . He does okay with other dogs but is still learning that just because he is the biggest, he is not the boss. He would possibly be okay with a dog-savvy cat, but tends to get very excited if they hiss or swat at him.

He knows the Sit command and sits for his food. He does not chase the resident cats, he is house-trained, and sleeps on the floor of his foster mom's room.

Einstein loves to chase bubbles and is a typical puppy on walks.  With continued training and guidance he will make a wonderful family member.

Cutter 2008 Head
More

Adopted 9/15/12!

Cutter

Cutter was originally adopted out in 2008 and was recently returned to us after an unexpected death in his adoptive family.

He is a large, darker black and tan male, around 5 years old. He's housebroken, and knows his basic commands, but needs a very strong leader to make sure he follows them. He is somewhat of a drama queen, and when he doesn't get his way, wants to use his body weight to push or pull in protest. He needs to be reminded of his manners including not jumping up on people who come to greet him.

This is a Level 3 Dog and will only go to a true Level 3 home. Please be sure you understand what this level of dog requires.

Daphne

Daphne is a beautiful tan and black female, approximately 1 year old, of medium size and has a lot of puppy traits left in her (gently mouthy, a little clumsy and absolutely adoragirl).

Daphne is a medium energy girl. Though at at times she will play hard with our resident dogs, it is usually at their invitation and she can definitely hold her own with them. She enjoys playing with the dogs but is just as happy to hang out with her people.

Darby is an adorable little girl, weighing in at only about 55 pounds. She will probably only mature to around 60 or 65 lbs. Darby was an unclaimed stray out of the Sacramento area, so nothing is known about her background. She is a petite German Shepherd with enough energy and personality to make up for her size! Darby is a black and tan bicolor, 9 to 10 month old little girl who is as busy as she is cute.

Darby is housebroken, and sleeps quietly in a crate at night. She is very eager to learn but is a little dramatic at first when she doesn't get her way. She is in need of a home that is willing to invest the time and energy in completing her training.

Stout

Stout is one of a litter of 6 puppies that were born on July 3, 2012. While they look pretty shepherdish, it is not truly known who the sire is (but it is suspected that he was a German Shepherd that frequently roamed the neighborhood).

At approximately 9 weeks old, this little guy is the largest and most people-oriented puppy in the group. He is sweet and loving, and will let you flip him over and rub his belly. He is happy to rough and tumble with his litter mates, but likes to be closer to his people as well. He will actually come when his name is called.

She is comfortable with both the male and female resident dogs, and has gotten along with all the people and dogs she has met so far. Brodie is a big, handsome, 4-5 yr old reddish tan and black, mature male. He was an unclaimed stray from Escalon shelter. He came into our program with several big lumps that turned out to be non-malignant fibrous tumors that we had removed.

Brodie spent the first few weeks in the program with another mature male foster buddy with no problems. He rides okay in a vehicle and trots okay next to a bike, however he could use more leash work.

He understands basic commands such as Sit, Stay. Brodie is housetrained. If left alone for extended period of time he will protest, and may even visit the neighbors, however he seems to be okay if he has a canine buddy. At this time, he's unknown with cats or children.

He is friendly, outgoing, and ready to explore the world. He is crate-trained, and learning his house manners including staying off the furniture. He is currently in a home with two other dogs, a cat, and kids.

Sam is looking for a home, preferrably with a pool, or access to swimming, to help his left leg develop correctly, as it is taking most of his weight in his rear end. Low impact exercise would be ideal for the next few months, so that the tendons, ligaments, and bones, are not put under constant stress while he is developing.

Patriot is a gorgeous black and red, 2 year old male. He was an unclaimed stray from the Sacramento area, so nothing is known about his background. At a lean, compact 65 lbs, this boy is active and athletic outside, but settles in nicely in the house.

Although he doesn't seem to have any formal training, he is a mild-mannered guy that wants to help out around the house. If you are making something in the kitchen, he is more than happy to put his front feet up on the counter to check out what's going on; if you are putting make-up on in the bathroom, he will stand beside you and look at himself in the mirror. In the car, he likes to ride shotgun. He apparently was also allowed on the furniture in his prior life, so he thinks nothing of trying to settle down next to you on the sofa. His most recent return was due to the unfortunate loss of his owner, and at that time Artie lost his stability and leadership. He did what typical, confident German Shepherds will do in that situation and assumed the leadership role -- which meant becoming more assertive toward strangers who came onto his property.

Since being returned, Artie has been in two foster homes with strong leadership and lots of structure; he seems to flourish in that type of environment. Una is one of two girl puppies rescued from Modesto with her momma, Nolla, and 5 brothers. Our best guess is that they were whelped around the first of December. While Nolla is a purebred German Shepherd, it appears that daddy wasn't (maybe Doberman Pinscher?).

This little cutie has a tan coat and black muzzle with touches of white and black on her chest, feet, and tail. Una is still very shy around people, so will need a patient, calm household to acclimate to her forever home.

Adopted 5/19/12!

Casey is a 9 month old female who was an owner surrender to a Sacramento area shelter when someone in the family became very allergic to her. She is a beautiful black and tan little lady who has adapted easily into her foster home. This girl has medium energey and would make a great hiking, running or biking companion.

She is comfortable with both the male and female resident dogs, and has gotten along with all the people and dogs she has met so far. Her compatibility with cats is questionable, but her previous owner indicated that she liked cats but chased them. Casey is intelligent and catches on very quickly but would benefit from further obedience training to further reinforce her reliability.

Lada is about 12 months old, housebroken, and has very nice house manners. She prefers to sleep by your bed at night, so she can greet you first thing in the morning with a big sweet kiss. He is friendly, confident and upbeat. He enjoys attention from his foster parent, giving brief licks in return. He stays near and follows but is not clingy. During free time, he checks back with his foster regularly for confirmation and pats, and comes readily when called. Raymond aka "Raymo" is a good-sized, handsome black and tan male, around 12-14 months old and weighing in at about 70 pounds. He was an owner surrender to a Sacramento shelter when his family no longer had time for him. This energetic boy is very playful with other dogs, and seems to think that every human and dog he meets wants to play with him!

Raymo is an active dog whose mind is always alert. If left unattended for long periods of time by himself, he may chew something, but if left with another dog or if someone is around and he's excercised enough, he seems content.

Peja Head

Peja

Adopted 2/11/12!

Peja is an adorable eight month old male, already weighing in at almost 75 pounds. He was surrendered by his owner when the owner had to go back to work and his job took him out of town.

Peja is an alert, bouncy, curious boy who still has puppy energy, and wants to check out every inch of everything. He shows signs of some training on leash, sit, down, and come, and makes good eye contact during interaction with his foster dad. He accepts correction without resentment, but may have to be told to do something twice before he believes you. He enjoys some patting and needs reassurance, but is not clingy or overly needful of attention. When finally tired out, he likes to rest at his foster dad's feet. He's a bit mouthy, as is common at his age, but is learning that it is not acceptable. He is also learning that wastebaskets are not toy stores.

Isabella is a cute youngster around 9-10 months old, with a lovely plush coat and weighing in at around 45-50 pounds. Isabella has a sweet temperament and is fairly relaxed for such a young girl. She's housebroken and sleeps great in the crate at night.

At age seven months and 45 pounds, Jacqueline is a beautiful, petite, black and red dynamo with plenty of energy who wants to play, play, and play some more! Jacqueline is good in the house for the most part, and sleeps through the night in her crate. Like all youngsters, she'll need watching until she's truly reliable.

Juneau also likes to "talk" to any who will listen and sings quite nicely any time he hears a siren. He is very people-oriented, so he doesn't want to be left out of any of the fun.

SPECIAL NEEDS

Linus is an extra-large, extra-friendly guy who wound up at the Merced pound as an unclaimed stray. He's around 6-7 years old, and has a mild form of lupus, which will need ongoing treatment with very inexpensive prednisone to keep it in check.

Linus loves people of all ages, and will walk up and say hello to just about any friendly human. He's very sweet and well-mannered, walks well on a leash, and in general is willing to go along with whatever you want to do. He loves to play ball, so he needs a home with some room to chase a ball about.

Sadie is a 5-6 year old Belgian Malinois or Malinois/Shepherd mix female. She has a beautiful tawny coat, and she weighs 70 pounds. All efforts to locate her current owner were to no avail, so she came into our rescue program.

She is very social with other dogs and greets everyone with a wagging tail. Sadie rides well in the car, looking out the window the whole time and taking in the scenery. She is quite vocal at times in new settings, but quiets down within a day.

He is currently a velcro puppy and loves crawling in any lap that is available. He is so squirmy, it is hard to get a good photo of him. Obedience training and confidence building will go a long way with this boy.

Adoption 1/28/12!

Cayenne is a very pretty, fairly large, nine month old female, weighing in at about 70 pounds. Based on her age, it would not be surprising for her to add another inch or two and five or ten pounds. She was given up by her owners when they could no longer care for her.

She's affectionate and likes being petted, and particularly likes curling up at your feet while you read a book or watch TV. She is crate-trained and housebroken. Although quite strong, Cayenne likes long walks and is reasonably controllable on a leash, and know some basic commands such as Sit and Down.

He ignores the cats in his foster home unless they move, and then he tries to get them to run so he can play chase. Once they hiss at him he admits defeat and waddles on. The small dog in his foster home tolerates him and will let him know if she's had enough of his puppinesss.
