Benz Head
More

Adopted 1/25/14

Benz

Benz is a very handsome black and tan male about 18 months old. He currently weighs in at about 60 pounds but has a 75-80 lb frame. Now that he is in a foster home, we hope to put some weight on him. Benz was turned into a local shelter with a mama dog and some day old babies that someone found on their property, so nothing is known about his background. When walking, he tries to jump up and pull down the neighborhood trash cans, so he was probably fending for himself at least for a little while.

Living in a home seems to be new for Benz, although so far he has not had an accident in the house. He is very curious, and once you can coax him to do something new the first time (going up and down stairs, getting in and out of the car, etc.), he is usually willing to do it on his own shortly after.

Joey Head
More

Adopted 1/25/14

Joey

Joey came to rescue on 12/9/13 at 8 weeks old. A good samaritan saved him from being taken to the pound in the town of Paradise, so nothing is known of his background.

Joey currently lives with 2 other GSD's and 2 cats. He loves to cuddle and cries when first put into a crate, and he loves to play and be chased by the resident adolescent male.

He is a typical puppy with lots of energy, and is in the discovery stage of his surroundings, so he should have plenty of chew toys to keep him busy (and not chewing on things he shouldn't).

Oly Head
More

Adopted 1/25/14

Oly

Oly is a two-to-three year old handsome black and red male. He is a big boy weighing in at 80 lbs, and still needing to gain another ten. Oly came to us from a Butte County shelter where he was an unclaimed stray so nothing is known about his background. He has fly strike on his ears, and was very thin and flea ridden when he entered the shelter, so may have been on his own for a little while.

Oly doesn't seem to have much if any training, but he is an amiable guy who wants to do what is expected of him. He currently pulls on the leash, but is quickly learning leash manners. Oly seems to like water, as he likes to splash around in the stream on his walks.

Xavier Head
More

Adopted 1/25/14

Xavier

Xavier or Xavi is a large handsome black and tan male. At 14 months old he is still growing and filling out, and will likely end up over 90lbs when he is done. Xavi was confiscated by animal control after he and his sister repeatedly escaped the unsecured fencing of their yard and finally one day killed the neighbors emu.

Xavi has gotten along with all of the large male and female dogs in his foster home. Although it is guessed that he was formally an outdoor only dog Xavi has grown very fond of indoor life. He has not had an accident in the house, he settles nicely in the evenings, and is learning to sleep quietly in a crate at night.

Andromeda Head
More

Adopted 1/18/14

Andromeda

Andromeda was turned in at the Sac City shelter as a very pregnant stray, so nothing is known about her background. She whelped a litter of puppies the very next night at the shelter, and came into our rescue just hours after that. In spite of being a puppy herself, she has been a very good mama.

Andromeda, or Romy, is between 12 and 18 months and is still a little underweight at 55 lbs. Romy is very lady like, and affectionate and sweet with every person she has met. She does not jump up on people, instead preferring to scoot as close as possible and give soft kisses.

Jewel Head
More

Adopted 1/18/14

Jewel

Jewel is an elegant, pint-sized, black and cream beauty. She is a fully grown Shepherd mix around 2 years old and weighs in just under 50 lbs. She was given up about a year ago by her owners because she was too mouthy with their foster children, and she will try to herd them by nipping at their heels, so no small children for this girl! However she plays great with children 8-10 years or older.

She is very active and loves a daily walk or run, a selection of dog toys, and an occasional beef marrow bone. She needs to be kept busy or she'll find something to chew on to amuse herself; but with training has learned not to chew on things other than her own toys.

NO CATS OR CRITTERS.

Misty Head
More

Adopted 1/18/14

Misty

Misty is an adorable bundle of affection. She is about 6 months old with a gorgeous shiny black coat. She is a typical puppy with lots of energy and loves to play. She gets along great with the large dogs in her foster home, and they play all the time. She likes toys, but hasn't quite grasped the "fetch" thing quite yet. She is a curious pup, and inspects everything around her. So far, her puppy curiosity has only caused her to chew a couple things, and she has only dug a couple small holes in the yard. Misty has had a couple potty accidents, but caught on to using the dog door very quickly. She wakes her foster dad in the morning to take her out (even though the dog door is open). She takes care of business, and then comes right back in to lie down.

Clarabella Head
More

Adopted 1/8/14

Clarabella

Clarabella is a 10-11 month old beauty. She was an original stray from the Modesto area so nothing is known of her background. She weighs about 68 lbs and is energetic with an athletic, sleek build. She likes to follow her current caregiver and always wants to know what's going on and is quite curious. She wrestles with the male GSD in the household who likes to rough house. She also likes to engage him in a game of tag with the tennis ball. During a recent adoption day, she played nicely with the small pups she was allowed to interact with. At times, she becomes mouthy, so care must be taken with small children.

Clarabella seems to know a few basic commands and is learning house manners. With small reminders, she settles down nicely inside the house. She has an expressive face and is smart, and a quick learner. Cars make her a little anxious and she got car sick. This can be remedied with continued car trips for fun activities.

Carina Head
More

Adopted 12/29/13

Carina

Carina is the most laid back girl in the bunch. She is the cuddler, happy to fall asleep on your feet or by your side... or steal your warm spot if you let her in the bed! She still has typical bouts of puppy energy and likes to get playful, but she sometimes gets tired of playing long before her siblings and will go find a quiet spot to fall asleep or just observe.

Carina is the sweetheart of the bunch, and will steal your heart as she curls up in your lap for a cuddle or snooze.

Samantha is currently in a foster home where she loves to play with the other big dogs. It is unknown how she is with cats or other small furry critters. She also came to us with a flea allergy and some missing hair. The fleas are all gone, and slowly her hair is starting to grow back.

Shira Head
More

Adopted 12/29/13

Shira

Shira is an adorable 4 month old youngster. She was surrendered to a local area shelter when her family could not afford the vet bills for a skin infection. On antibiotics, she is healing nicely.

Shira is super shy, and it takes her a little while to warm up, so her new family will be patient while she gets used to them, and as they work to socialize her. Shira is frightened by quick movements, but recovers fairly quickly. Once she's warmed up to a person or dog she will come out of her shell and play.

Snowball Head
More

Adopted 12/29/13

Snowball

Snowball is a beautiful 18 month old all white female GSD. She is a petite girl at around 50lbs, and a little on the skinny side. She was surrendered by her owner, due to the owner's health issues. Snowball was mainly an outside dog, but seems to have some familiarity with the house. We have been working on her house manors, correcting her when she counter surfs or jumps on the furniture. She very much wants to please her humans, and becomes submissive and rolls over on her back when corrected. She appears to be housebroken, as we have had no accidents in the house, and she alerts us when she needs to go outside. Snowball is very affectionate, and loves to have her tummy rubbed.

Chip

Chip is a handsome 2 1/2 year old male. He was originally rescued as a puppy with a huge wound on his side. He was fixed up and adopted to a wonderful family. Unfortunately, their landlord changed the rules of the ranch and won't allow him any longer.

Chip is a lovable guy but is a little nervous in new situations and with new people and dogs. He has great house-manners other than thinking he gets to sleep on the beds. He loves kids and other large dogs.

Eva Head
More

Adopted 12/21/13

Eva

Eva is a 2-3 year old bicolor female. This poor girl was given up to the shelter when she starting losing weight and hair. As it turns out, all she had was a flea allergy that had turned into a fairly severe skin infection, as well as an upper respiratory infection. After a couple weeks of antibiotics this beauty is looking and feeling better. She will be gorgeous once all of her hair grows back.

Eva gets along with all of the large dogs in her foster home, after a proper introduction. She has high prey drive so should not go to a home with cats or other small furry critters. Livestock is probably not a good idea either. She focuses on just about anything that moves when we are out on walks.

Orion Head
More

Adopted 12/21/13

Orion

Orion is the only male in the bunch. He is fairly laid back and likes to sit and observe the world around him. He looks very mature when he's sitting and watching, like he is the cool dude in charge. But when he hears a load sound or strange bark he runs for safety. He likes to play rough and tumble with his sisters, but doesn't like it very much when they gang up on him.

He can be quite vocal when he wants something, and quite a character about it too. At feeding time he needs to be supervised or he will try to push is way into every other dog's bowl. Like his sister, Lyra, he thinks he needs to sample it all.

Royce is a sweet, playful, energetic black male with gray accents, approximately two years old. He came to us as an unclaimed stray from a Sacramento area shelter, so nothing is known about his background. He's a little smaller than the average male GSD, weighing around 60 pounds.

Generally, he greets people with wags and other dogs with attempts to play. He plays well although sometimes does not understand when dogs are not in the mood for it. There is no hesitation to jump in when the car door opens, plus he knows how to use a dog door. He settled into his foster home without any obvious issues or behavioral concerns and is housebroken. Royce enjoys a good game of fetch without obsessing, and except for a sock or two, he understands which items are not dog toys. Training is made much easier by his motivation for food.

Alexia Head

Adopted 12/7/13

Alexia

Alexia is a 4-5 year old female whose last owner surrendered her to a local Sacramento shelter.

Previously she was kept as an outdoor/garage only pet where she lived with another dog and cats. She has beautiful markings on a solid frame and a very gentle disposition. Currently she is in a foster home with other dogs and cats and gets along well with her canine and feline companions. She loves to play with a tennis ball or better yet a football. She will drop the ball at your feet repeatedly until you play with her. If you run the hose, she will bite at the water in play. It appears she was not taken on walks often in the past. She originally got very nervous by passing traffic while walking down a street. Walking with other confident dogs is helping her ignore the distractions of traffic and be able to enjoy the walk.

Betzi Head
More

Adopted 11/23/13

Betzi

Betzi is an 18 - 24 month old female out of Modesto Shelter. She was an unclaimed stray, so nothing is known of her background. She appears to have lived a fairly sheltered life, likely left in a backyard, and not taken out much in the big world. When presented with new circumstances she may default to barking at the new "unknown". She weights around 75 pounds and has a soft, slightly longer coat. She also will flash the biggest brown eyes at you whenever she is near.

Betzi would like the life of a house princess, and would prefer a home with a pool, or frequent trips to the lake or river to splash and swim.

Donovan is a handsome medium sized black and tan male and was an unclaimed stray from a Sacramento shelter, so nothing is known of his background. The shelter listed him as 5 years old, but he has no gray hair and has very clean teeth,so we estimate him to be closer to 2-2.5 years old. He weighs about 65-70 lbs, but is a little on the thin side. When Donovan first came out of the shelter, he was very timid, and would hide on the floor of the car when transported. Within a few days, he started to come out of his shell and displays the desire for affection, and is learning to ride more comfortably in the car. Donovan seems to be housebroken.

Lyra Head
More

Adopted 11/23/13

Lyra

Lyra has the most 'lab-like' personality of the bunch. She is happy, energetic, very kissy, and her tail is always wagging. Lyra is also currently the heaviest of the bunch weighting in at 9 lbs, a full pound more than her smaller sister. That's because Lyra has never met a food bowl she didn't like. She was the first to sample solid food, and doesn't leave the bowl until every last morsel is gone. Because of this, Lyra may need an exercise program and supervised food intake as she gets older.

Lyra loves every person she's met, but absolutely adores chasing around the yard with the big dogs.

Liesel

Liesel is a 5 month old puppy, surrendered by her owners to a veterinarian when they could not afford the surgery necessary to remove the collar embedded in her neck because it had never been adjusted for her growth. It appears that the imbedded collar was removed in time, avoiding long term throat or voice box damage, though the fur pattern on her neck may be permanently disrupted. She is also recovering from underfeeding, and mild, tick-induced anemia. At 40 pounds, with good sized feet, she promises to be a handsome big girl when she is all grown up.

Liesel is very affectionate, attentive to her human, smart, and trains easily. For her age, she is comparatively calm and well-mannered, but a more spunky, confident kid is emerging as her health improves.

Boise

Boise is a 10-12 month old male who came from the Modesto Shelter so we have no information on his background. He has a sweet disposition but is a bit on the timid side. His shyness may be from lack of exposure with many day to day experiences and routines. When unsure about a situation he will default to a down position. It appears he may have been an outside dog but is becoming more comfortable with his environment as time goes on. He is doing much better with his walks and has learned to sit. Boise will need more training with basic obedience fundamentals of sit, stay, come, down and leave it.

Because of his age, he is still in the chewing stage and is lightening quick at times to steal a more interesting or inappropriate item in spite of having access to kongs, treats and various nylabones.

He has nice big paws and will most likely be a large dog once full grown. He has a lot of drive, and would do well having a job or even doing competition sport, and will be a lot of fun to train.

Sprocket Head
More

Adopted 9/21/13

Sprocket

Sprocket was left at the shelter when his owners decided they did not have enough room or time for him. At one year old, he is a sweet, affectionate, energetic, and happy adolescent puppy, though nearly full size at 70 pounds. He is working nicely on learning basic manners and pet skills.

Sprocket loves human contact, and seems to think that if he just crawls into your lap enough times, you will realize that you actually do want a 70 lb lap dog. During a good tummy rub or chest scratch, he zones out and enjoys the bliss. The more attention he gets, the calmer he is. He has some puppy habits like being mouthy, but is realizing that a respectful sit gets him more attention than grabbing hands.

"Ninety pounds of sugar" is how the evaluator who sprung him from the shelter summarized Tallac. Indeed, he is an extremely friendly and affectionate dog, likes everyone he meets, loves belly rubs, and would happily be a lap dog and sleep on his human's bed. He follows his foster dad like a puppy, and rests quietly on his feet whether at the living room easy chair, or in the kitchen doing dishes.

SPECIAL NEEDS

Chaplin is a 2-3 year old male who was an found by a good Samaritan wandering the streets. After weeks of trying to find his owners, they asked us to help.

Chaplin is a handsome classic black and tan shepherd, very compact weighing in at about 65-70lbs. It appears that prior to the good Samaritan finding him, Chaplin suffered trauma to the head strong enough to cause both ear drums to burst, and break a couple of his teeth. This currently causes him to tilt his head to the left.

Sheba Lee is a 5-6 year old solid black 80 pound girl. She was an unclaimed stray out of the Modesto Shelter so nothing is known of her background. Considering the conditions of her coat at the shelter, it looked like she had little care and was kept outside. Since she has been out of the shelter, she has quickly bonded with her foster, and is friendly with the other 7 dogs in the house although she is dominant.

Sheba Lee appears housebroken, crate trained, and knows "sit" and "down" commands. She walks well on leash and only requires minimum corrections. Although she is on the smaller size, what Trixie lacks in stature, she more than makes up for in drive and sheer athleticism. When it comes to chasing balls, or playing doggie tag, she has no problem running with the resident big dogs in her foster home. She has a surprising ability to jump for a smaller Dog, so this girl will need to be homed in a yard with full fencing on all sides. Because of her natural play drive, she would be a great candidate to compete in agility, flyball, obedience trials, or a similar physically and mentally challenging sport. Kensi

Kensi is an large, gorgeous, black and tan beauty around 18 months old, and weighing in at almost 80 lbs. She was given up by her owners when they lost their home. Kensi is a total sweetheart, and has loved every human she has met so far. She likes to lean against you and cuddle. She would probably be a lap dog if she could fit. Kensi is an active girl and loves a daily walk or run, a selection of dog toys, and an occasional beef marrow bone.

Kensi is housebroken, crate-trained, and is a good listener with house manner reminders. She is eager to please and a quick study, so formal training will be a breeze for the right person who is willing to invest the time and energy in this girl.

Hannah is a gorgeous, black and red 2 year old female. She was an unclaimed stray from a Sacramento shelter, so nothing is known of her background. Hannah is a little timid at first, but warms up to people quickly and is then quite affectionate. She is good with adults and has appropriately met children of all ages out in public.

Hannah is housebroken. Her leash behavior is good, and she only requires gentle tugs to keep in line. She will sit and lay down, and is gentle when eating treats out of your hand. Hannah has gotten along with both large and small dogs in her foster homes and respects the barrier between herself and the resident cat in her current foster home. When out and about at pet-friendly stores including Home Depot and Lowes, her behavior is excellent. While first a little ambivalent about meeting new people, Hannah is warming up quickly with a lot of socialization.

Lolita

Lolita aka "Lola" is a beautiful, thin, leggy mostly black female, approximately 1 year old, about 55 pounds. She was turned in to a Sacramento area shelter by her previous owners who had spent time on training for her, but found they could no longer keep her.

Lolita has a lot of puppy traits left in her - loves to play, high energy, gently mouthy, a little clumsy and absolutely adorable. She is nearly fully grown height wise - perhaps she'll grow another inch or so. She will likely put on a couple more pounds in the next several months as she matures and fills out. Riley is a 2 year old male pulled from the Modesto Shelter. He came in as an unclaimed stray. He is a very friendly boy who doesn't know any commands outside of "sit". He walks pretty good on a lead, and rolls on his belly for a good rub. He ignored the other dogs in the kennels around him, even the ones that barked fairly aggressively towards him. Riley readily went into a crate when transported from the shelter, and it was clear he had not been in a vehicle or out and about in the world very much prior to coming into rescue.

Riley is looking for a home that will include him in daily outings and activities and continue his basic training. It is unknown how he is with cats or small critters.

Dylan

Dylan is a very handsome 1 year old male long haired GSD (possible mix). He came to us as an unclaimed stray from the Modesto Shelter. Even with his handsome long coat, Dylan has required surprisingly little day to day maintenance. We have not found him to shed much but come spring he may shed quite a bit as many shepherds do. For now just a light brushing is all he has needed.

Under his long flowing locks, Dylan has the build of a canine athlete. He has great jumping ability (he doesn't need a running start to jump over a 3' baby gate), and a lot of stamina and incredible strength. He could easily compete in agility, rally, or fly ball and might make an excellent running partner.

Jethro is housebroken. His leash behavior is excellent. He naturally Heels on leash, even around other people and dogs, with only gentle tugs required to keep him in line. He will sit and lay down, and is very gentle when eating treats out of your hand. He sleeps quietly in a crate at night.

Mika

SPECIAL NEEDS

Mika is an 8 year old, AKC registered, very dark black and tan, very handsome, full-sized girl, with a big frame and currently weighing around 90 pounds. Mika was surrendered to a Modesto area shelter when her older couple family moved to Florida and couldn’t take her along.

Mika is an extremely affectionate and gentle house princess. She is very people oriented, and wants to be next to her humans wherever they go. Indoors, she settles comfortably and quietly. She loves to get her neck or rump scratched, and gives nice little kisses in return. She happily offers her belly for a tummy rub, and takes treats or pills from the hand with a very delicate touch of her tongue.

This is a Level 2 Dog!
