Rowen Head
More

Adopted 12/31/15

Rowen

Rowen is a handsome black and tan male 8-9 months old. His coat is smooth and lays flat to his body giving him a beautiful sleek look. He was an owner surrender to a Sacramento area shelter, but the previous family only had him a few days and little is known of his background.

Rowen came into foster without many manners, but has proven to be a quick learner that aims to please. He is housebroken and sleeps in a crate at night. He is strong and tries to pull when walked unless given corrections with a proper training collar. Anything loose will go into Rowen's mouth, i.e, shoes, picture frames, or the rug. Supervision and proper redirection toward his own toys are needed to help him stay out of trouble.

Scarlett

Scarlett is a cute 60 lb female, approximately 2 years old. She could stand to put on about 10 lbs. A stray out of a Yolo County shelter, nothing is known of her background.

Scarlett walks very well on a leash and is great in the car. She finds great security being in a crate and needs some coaxing to get her out. She has had no accidents in the house and sleeps well through the night in her crate.

Adopted 11/28/15

Anson

Anson is a two year old Belgian Malinois. He is on the smaller side weighing in at about 55lbs, Anson could stand to put on a few pounds. This boy was an unclaimed stray from a local area shelter so nothing is known about his background.

Anson is a sweet boy with a ton of energy! He was very anxious when he first came to his foster home, but that is to be expected when you are thrown into a new environment with 4 other dogs sniffing you. Since then he has settled in nicely. He got a bath day one and was a little skeptical at first, but learned to accept it.

Anson is a finger nibbler when he wants attention. He doesn't bite hard at all, just nibbles your fingers or hand when he wants you to pet him. He is very affectionate and loves to be pet. He sits on command, but usually won't hold the position very long.

Barkley has mastered going up and down the stairs, he has decided that dog beds are a good invention, and so far has slept quietly in his crate at night. Barkley has not had an accident in the house yet, but is watched carefully and is taken out frequently.

Oswald Head

SENIOR

Adopted 11/21/15

Oswald

Oswald, (aka Oz) is a very handsome male, with black and tan coloring, who we think is approximately 6 - 8 years old. He was an owner surrender to a local area shelter, but even though he was surrendered, we know little about his background.

As is sometime the case with older GSDs, he seems to have rear end mobility issues. We are having his rear end and knees evaluated, so we can come up with a plan to keep him pain-free as he ages.

Oz is currently living in a house with 3 other GSDs and two medium sized dogs, with a mixture of male and female.

Brinx Head

Adopted 11/7/15

Brinx

Brinx is a friendly black and tan male who was an unclaimed a stray from a Sacramento shelter, so nothing is known of his background. The shelter listed him as 8 years old, but he doesn't have much grey and would move much better if he lost some weight. We believe he is 5-6 years old. This handsome boy was already altered and had a microchip when he arrived at the shelter. If you base the amount of love he received by his weight, then he was well loved by someone, as he can stand to lose about 15 lbs.

Brinx slept nicely through the night in a crate and rides easily in a car, but has a little trouble getting in.

Gemma

Gemma is a very cute, very feisty GSD with a red, tan and black coat, who is on the smaller side at about 55 lbs. Although she is short of stature, she has a long bushy tail and classic Shepherd appearance. Gemma came to us as an unclaimed stray from the Sacramento SPCA, so nothing is known of her background. Although her exact age is unknown, but we estimate her to be approximately 15-18 months.

Gemma is a very high drive dog, who is quite vocal, and tends to be very bossy around her foster pack. Her demeanor indicates that she has not had much socialization around other dogs. While she clearly wants to engage, she has not yet learned how to play appropriately. She will think nothing of taking on a large Alpha male and sparring aggressively with him.

She has become very comfortable in her foster home being an only dog. She wasn't very familiar with being an indoor dog as she would not walk on vinyl flooring and not so sure about people. Given lots of love and attention Bali wants to please her people, nudging for a pet without being pushy.

Kora Head
More

Adopted 7/25/15

Kora

Kora is a cute 55 lb black and tan female, approximately 7 months old. She was surrendered to a vet's office when the previous family could not afford her vet care. The vet's office treated her and when she was bouncing around like a typical young dog, they contacted us to take her in. This girl seems starved for attention. She likes nothing better than to snuggle as closely as she can for attention, however, she doesn't understand boundaries or any commands yet. She also jumps up when excited, so very small children would not be recommended.

In the current foster home, Kora is living with three male German Shepherds. She is just beginning to show interest in playing with two of the dogs. It's funny to watch as she tries to join in the play, but then runs like she's afraid if the dogs try to include her.

Sera

Sera is a beautiful black and tan female puppy weighing about 30 lbs. She is 4 months old and loves to run and play with other dogs her size. She is currently in a home with a 7 month old lab mix and a cat.

Sera was an owner surrender and we learned the original family kenneled her for long hours while they worked and lived in an apartment. She was then sold to a new family with a female dog that did not like Sera and Sera was very intimidated by that dog and the neighbor's dog. They also had young children and realized having a puppy was too much work. After one month, Sera was surrendered to our rescue.

Bahama

Bahama is a one year old, handsome male. He weighs approximately 80 lbs, but could stand to put on some weight so his body can match his huge feet. He came as a stray from an Oakdale shelter so nothing is known about his background.

Flystrike on both ears and Bahama's behavior suggest he was primarily an outdoor dog. He resists getting into a car, then has to be strongly encouraged to get out. He also seemed afraid of the scale at the vet's office. He generally acts insecure inside. When outside off leash in the yard, this boy acts like a typical young dog, exploring and wanting to play with the other German Shepherds in his foster home.

Wilsie

Wilsie is a sweet 4 year old black and tan female. She weighs approximately 65 lbs. Wilsie was an unclaimed stray from the shelter, so not much is known about her background. She was found running the railroad tracks with a male shepherd, both in poor body condition, and infested with literally hundreds of ticks.

Wilsie was originally placed in a foster home where she was the only dog. Unfortunately Wilsie had been very dependent on the male she was found with, and didn't really know what to do without him. She was quite shy and timid. While she was was easy to have in the home when someone was around, she would become destructive if left, breaking out of crates, pulling a screen off to get inside.

Raza was found as a stray in the Modesto area so not much is known of his background. He is very timid and will submissively urinate if he thinks he is in trouble. Approaching Raza in a non-dominant posture by crouching down to dog level lets him know he's not in any trouble. Teaching him simple commands such as sit, stay, down and rewarding him after each success will also benefit this lovable dog. He will need a handler who understands how to build confidence in a timid dog.

Vettel Head

Adopted 6/27/15

Vettel

Vettel is a kind, gentle boy who is social with other dogs but is still a bit shy and gaining confidence with people. He is a one-year-old on the smaller side at 60lbs and increasing, who was left with another dog in his Modesto area house when his previous owners moved out. His coat shows signs of prior neglect and malnourishment. With patience, time, and proper nutrition, it will grow back to be as beautiful as any long coat GSD's fur that you have seen.

Hiking with his foster pack is helping to bring him out of his shell. Regardless of how long the hike is, he loves every minute of it, does not tire easily, and hangs with whichever dog is being more adventurous. Despite joining the chase with his pack, he does not seem to have much of a prey drive. He does not care to play fetch either, but he likes running with dogs who do.

Originally, Virgil came as a stray from a Sacramento shelter, so nothing is known of his background before then.

Virgil is now in a foster home with 3 other dogs and 4 cats and does well with all of them. He has moderate energy, but will engage in play with the young female German Shepherd in the foster home. SPECIAL NEEDS

Adopted 6/20/15

Axton

Axton is a large, 75 pound, 6 month old male puppy, who was born with cataracts and small eyes. As a result, Axton's vision is hazy and he occasionally walks into things. Good light helps him navigate and he doesn't seem to know there's anything wrong. He requires daily treatment to both eyes, currently using an ointment. This boy is very squirmy, so it is tricky getting the medicine into his eyes. Even after a possible cataract surgery, Axton will require medicine to both eyes for his lifetime.

Regardless of his visual impairment, Axton is a typical puppy. In the foster home, he loves to play with the big dogs and finds pulling up plants a fun part of his day. He will go after a tennis ball, but bores of it quickly. He likes to play with water sprayed from a hose and will tip over a water bowl if it isn't weighted or attached to something. Axton goes easily into a crate and will chew on the various toys and bones to keep him occupied.

She rides nicely in a car (although she does like to ride shotgun) and sleeps nicely in a crate at night. Kenna was not well socialized when we got her and was reactive to other dogs while on leash, and while in her crate. When free, she gets along with the other five dogs in her foster home, infact loves to play with her best foster buddy Arek.

Adopted 4/4/15

Lupe

Lupe is a 2 year old, 75 lb., sable female with a definite mask on her face. She was a stray from a Sacramento shelter, so nothing is known of her background. She lives with three male German Shepherds easily in her foster home and is learning to not pester the cats. She was a wild child when she arrived, jumping up on people, mouthy, and leaping on furniture in the house. A quick learner, Lupe seems to understand when told to "settle" in the house, is learning "leave It," "crate," and "down." She rides nicely in the car and walks well on a leash. She also has decided she likes playing with one of the male dogs who also enjoys playing.

Lupe isn't given much freedom inside yet, but she seems to be housebroken. She is sleeping through the night in a crate with bones to entice her in and keep her occupied. She will tear out plants in the yard when she is wound up, but has not been destructive otherwise.

Astro Head

Adopted 3/28/15

Astro

Astro is a sable 18-24 month old male German Shepherd who weighs about 80 lbs and could stand to add a few pounds. He enjoys his meals, so that shouldn't be a problem. He was a stray out of a Modesto shelter, so nothing is known of his background. He looks and acts like he's still growing with large feet and movements of a young dog. Astro will run in and grab shoes if left out. He will chase a ball but doesn't have big interest in the game. He is a big drama king and will will yelp loudly when given a strong correction. He is also a whiner when excited or uncertain, which we are working on breaking.

Astro is living with 2 male dogs and will play with one of them and seems to enjoy the game of chase, but he doesn't always seem to know when the other dog has had enough. Crates seem new to Astro and he cries off and on in the evening when it's bedtime.

Lancelot

Lancelot is a 2.5 year old black and tan male on the smaller side. He originally came to our program as a stray from the Modesto area. He was adopted in 2013, but was returned when the second dog in the home was diagnosed with epilepsy and Lancelot did not understand that he couldn't continue to play hard with the other dog. The family felt it was best for Lancelot to find a home where he could get the attention and play time he craves.

Lancelot knows basic obedience, rides well in the car, is housebroken and crate trained. He loves to chew his toys (ball, rope, hard bones) and running in the yard. He will chew the bed in his kennel if he does not have toys available. He is good with children ages 10 and up and great on a leash, even with the kids. He also loves to lay in the den while his "mom" works on the computer.

Zuko

Zuko is a 12 to 18 month old Malinois who was surrendered to a Sacramento area shelter when the owner had no time to train or devote to him. He is a slender male with long legs that can propel him 4 feet off the ground when he is excited. Zuko is very affectionate and can be a bit pushy by insisting on getting his head scratched by any available hand. If he feels ignored, you may also get a paw on your leg to remind you he is near and ready for a good petting.

Although he was outside for a good amount of time before coming into rescue, he has developed decent house manners and has not had an accident in his current foster home. He sleeps in a crate at night, and settle fairly well on his dog bed in the living room during the day.

Lee

Lee is a stunning 9 years young white shepherd who weighs about 90 lbs. His family that had him since he was a pup had physical and financial limitations and could no longer care for him, so he was given up to a local Sacramento shelter. The prior owners said Lee used a dog door, had lived with another dog, and likes water and swimming.

In his current foster home, Lee is living very well with two male German Shepherds and several cats. He has proven to be fully housebroken and can be left inside for several hours with the other dogs when no one is home. When Lee first arrived at his foster home, he seemed very anxious. Within 2-3 days, this boy has settled in nicely.

Pilot still gets car sick, and like many GSDs is very body sensitive. He will cry like he is being tortured when getting vaccinations or his nails clipped. All part of a GSDs charm!

Akua is very tall and lanky; he is a on the thin side and could stand to put on a few pounds.

Akua is housebroken, and is very easy to have in the house. If you ask him to go lie down on a bed he will. He sleeps quietly in his crate all night. He likes to be right with his people. He is very unhappy to be shut outside, even if it is just for a few minutes to go potty. Generally he will jump at the back door for a few minutes, then will go about his business. Davide

Davide (da'vid) came into our rescue from the Sacramento County shelter with a moderate case of demodectic mange. He came into the shelter as an unclaimed stray, so his exact background is unknown. What we DO know about Davide is that his temporary skin condition does not slow him down one single bit! He is a very alert and engaging eight month old male GSD with an intense stare, an extremely high play drive, and above average intelligence. Given the opportunity, Davide will play for hours on end with the other dogs in his foster home. He is social with all other dogs, but for a young guy is already showing some tendencies to want to be an Alpha dog. While this kind of bossy behavior sometimes stems from insecurity, in Davide's case it appears to come from a place of genuine confidence. Every indication is that Davide will grow up to be high drive, level III dog. His strong, tenacious personality will serve him well in learning a job or sport activity, but be aware that this type of dog is not for everyone.

For the most part, Davide appears to be housebroken, and has only had a few accidents so far. With a little more practice, and hourly visits outside he should be over this quickly. For a young guy, he walks extremely well on a leash both on his own, and with other pack members.

This 2.5 year old thin, black and tan female was an owner surrender to a Placer County shelter. The previous owner received complaints of her barking, so surrendered her to the animal control officer serving the complaint. Her 61 lb body can stand to put on at least 5 lbs.

Olive had a litter of puppies sometime in the past. Signs of fly strike to one ear and an old injury to the tip of her tail, indicate that Olive was kept outside most if not all of the time. Currently, she is learning not to pester the cats in the foster home, but does not want to harm them. Three male German Shepherds are also in the foster home, although doesn't seem to know how to play with other dogs. When the other dogs bark, Olive runs away from what she must perceive as the danger. So far, she has not made any noise except light whimpers.

Olive is under close supervision, as she is probably not housebroken and doesn't know about house manners. So far, she has had no accidents in her current foster home. At 122 lbs, this king-sized 5.5 year old could afford to lose 20+ lbs and will still be quite a big boy. Cruiser is laid back and in most other ways is a gentle giant. He looks older than his years with a gray muzzle, elbow callouses, and ears that have signs of fly strike, likely due to spending most of his life outdoors. Much of the world is new to him, but he has been learning quickly, gaining confidence, and understands basics. He is easy on leash, only giving it a good tug when he wishes to greet another dog. Cruiser knows "sit" and is housebroken.

Although Cruiser did not have a lot of human handling, he simply likes being with people.
