Kip Head
More

Adopted 12/22/2018

Kip

Kip is an 11 month old, tall and lanky, black and tan male weighing about 80 lbs. One ear is floppy at the moment but may still go up. When his original owners couldn't afford care for a necessary medical procedure, he was surrendered to a vet's office. The vet's office then contacted us and we took him in.

Kip is a really smart and affectionate boy with a lot of potential. He sits, lays down, and loves to play fetch. He pulls a bit on leash when walking, but not bad. He is housebroken and will go into a crate. Kip is currently in a house with a chihuahua, rabbit and cats.

Newman Head
More

Adopted 12/22/2018

Newman

Newman is a handsome and low-key 4 to 5 year old black and tan male who came to us from a local area shelter, so little is know of his background.

We've only had Newman for about a day, but here is what we know so far:

He has gotten along with the 5 resident dogs (3- GSDs & 2- GSPs) who are a mixture of sizes and genders. He is very easy to have in the house and when approached will roll over and offer his belly to you. He is still somewhat reserved, understandably since he is fresh out of the shelter in a new environment, but I expect him to become more social as he feels more comfortable.

Duncan appears to want a playmate, as he tries to engage the female with play bows, but she is not interested. He is sleeping quietly through the night on a dog bed in the foster mom's bedroom.

Sammie Jo Head
More

Adopted 12/15/2018

Sammie Jo

Sammie Jo aka Momma is a beautiful Red and Black German Shepherd approximately 3 years old.  She came into a local shelter with her litter of 8 puppies, so nothing is known of her background.  She was thin when she came into rescue but is currently at an ideal weight of 70lbs.

Sammie Jo is super sweet and loves attention.  She does have some ball drive.  She will bring you her ball or toy and wait patiently for you to throw.  She also has a medium prey drive, so a home with small dogs or cats would not work for this girl.

Casper

Casper is a handsome, 4 year old black and tan long coat male weighing 84 lbs. He was adopted from our rescue and with much care and attention to Casper's needs, he is now at a healthy weight and has regrown most of his hair. He was recently surrendered because of increasing medical concerns. He has been diagnosed with pannus in his eyes, which requires daily ointment. He also has severe arthritis in his back hips and at least one bad knee which requires pain and/or anti-inflammatory medication to manage.

Halsey is a cuddler and a love bug.  She also has a devious sense of humor.  She loves to hide behind things and pounce on the other unsuspecting puppies when they least expect it.  We swear we can hear her laughing after she has pounced on one of her brothers or sisters.  She will do best in a home that can appreciate her sense of humor.  Halsey is also the first puppy to have her ears stand up.

Little Joe Head
More

Adopted 12/8/2018

Little Joe

Little Joe is a 7-8 month old adorable black and tan male that weighs about 56lbs. He was an unclaimed stray from a local shelter, so his background is unknown.

This is an affectionate boy that loves to be pet and give kisses. If allowed to, he would follow his foster mom everywhere around the house. He will make a nice companion dog.

Little Joe would likely do best with a mentor dog in his new home to show him the ropes. He still needs to learn manners when interacting with other dogs. He is being fostered with a young female German Shepherd and a male adolescent Shepherd/husky and has done well. He seems to have moderate energy and will engage in play with dogs that are not too intense. He still inappropriately chews and should not be left free unattended.

Portia

Portia is a petite 6 year old black and tan, female German Shepherd. She was adopted as a one year old to a young couple with no children. They now have two young children and find they cannot meet Portia's high energy needs.

Betty Boop

Betty Boop is a 2-year-old white female. A professional trainer purchased her as a puppy and did some initial obedience training. She has decided to close her facility and asked us to find Betty a home.

Betty Boop is an absolute sweetheart and loves to give kisses. She is good with other dogs and with cats.

She has lived her entire life in a chain link kennel. All of her contact with people has been walks on leash, so she is very motivated to please when leashed. She heels like an obedience champ! Unfortunately, she was never brought indoors, so common household sights and sounds indoors scare her.

Adopted 10/27/2018

Vaughn

Vaughn is an 18 month old black and tan who weighs in at about 80 lbs. He came to us from a local shelter as an unclaimed stray so nothing is known about his background. While his past life is a mystery, it does appear that someone began working with him - he has a good understanding of basic commands like sit, down, and shake. He uses a doggie door to go outside and appears housebroken. He is living in a foster home with 4 other German Shepherds and can usually be found trying to initiate play with the other dogs. He has been around small dogs and got along well, but due to his large size and playful demeanor, he would love a home with another large breed dog to play with.

He prefers to sleep on a dog bed next to his human, but he will sleep quietly in the crate at night (after a few initial protest whimpers) if he is the same room as his human.

Gino

Gino is an approximately 3.5 year old handsome red and black male, currently underweight at 67 lbs. He was abandoned in a dog park and landed at a Sacramento area shelter, so very little is known about his past.

Since his arrival into our program, he has settled in nicely with his co-foster, Foxy (see Available Females for Adoption). The two engage in frequent play, enjoy daily walks, and offer comfort during their time alone. Gino was observed playing well with many large dogs, but small dogs trigger strong reactive behaviors. Please be aware of the necessary care if considering adopting Whistler. He has an eye condition known as Pannus (Chronic Superficial Keratitis), thought to be an auto-immune disease that affects the tissues of the cornea with inflammation. He has some visual impairment and left untreated, may result in blindness. His condition is currently being treated with application of eye ointment once daily. Treatment for Pannus is lifelong. Even short periods of interrupted therapy (ie: 2-4 weeks), may cause severe recurrence with devastating effects on the dog. High altitudes, smoke and exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation may exacerbate the condition. He comes with his own pair of DOGGLES.

Beary Head

SPECIAL NEEDS

Adopted 9/12/2018

Beary

Beary is a 4 year old black and tan female who was surrendered by her owners because they were unable to manage her multiple medical conditions. She came to us weighing 59 lbs and very underweight, missing much of her hair, hematomas on one ear and in need of dental care. Since she was relinquished, she has been treated for wide-spread skin and ear infections, provided a dental cleaning which involved pulling a few teeth, as well as removing a hematoma on the right ear. There is evidence that she had at least one litter of puppies in the past. Despite all these challenges, Beary has shown improvement in the regrowth of much of her beautiful coat and has gained 5 pounds. Her right ear, however, will remain flaccid and has had repeated infections. Her skin is also prone to infections, so a very limited ingredient, high quality dog food and no dog treats is best to help control her skin irritations.

Butch

Butch is a handsome black and tan 4 year old male weighing 90 lbs. Due physical limitations, he was relinquished by his prior owner because she was unable to manage the exercise Butch deserves. He shared his home with multiple Chihuahuas and welcomed all human visitors without hesitation. He currently shares his Foster home with a dominant female (see Zana, available female dogs) who eagerly tries to engage him in play. Initially he appeared aloof, but slowly he is returning the request with mutual action! In the home, Butch is quite content in the company of his human. He is learning to walk well on a leash and loves exploring the neighborhood. He finds the water enticing and has no hesitation entering the shores on a lake walk or wading his paws in the pool.

When she first came to her foster home she was a bit reserved and cautious, as everything was new to her. Although cautious, she was very interested in learning and it didn't take her long to discover that being indoors and hanging with her pack was a great way to live!

This sweet girl is cautious with people she doesn't know, but once she's comfortable, she's affectionate and shows how gentle she can be.  She seems to warm up to woman faster and also knows true dog people.  She loves entertaining herself with big, floppy squeaky toys, but never figured out fetching a ball.

Thunder is an 8-year-old, male, black and tan GSD surrendered by his owner who had him since he was a puppy. His previous owners had to move in with family and were not able to bring Thunder with them.

Thunder has excellent house manners. He does not get on furniture, is housebroken and has done well when left in the house for short periods of time. He walks well on a leash and knows basic commands. He learned very quickly how to wait for his food and I believe he will be very easy to train. For awhile we were afraid Iza would lose her foot, but this girl is a trooper with all of her wound care. Her foot is almost fully healed, so she will soon be starting nightly walks; the little girl could stand to lose a few pounds.

Iza was previously an outdoor dog, but has learned that indoor life is quite nice. She is trustworthy in the house during the workday with access to the outside. Dyna came to us as an owner surrender after Good Samaritans found her on their property and held her for the legal stray hold time. She currently resides with another large, playful male Malinois mix who tires her out with constant play.

This little lady quickly became a volunteer favorite throughout GCGSR. She is incredibly friendly and very social! Her foster has taken her camping, to restaurants, and even to work with him. He gets along well with the other German Shepherds of various ages in his foster home, but he can get antsy sometimes when he is out-and-about if there are a lot of other dogs around.  He is a flexible boy; he loves to sleep on the dog bed next to his foster mom, but he will also sleep quietly in a crate.  While he will sleep in a crate, he does not like to be contained in a crate or kennel.

No cats, small dogs, or small critters!!!

Autumn Head
More

Adopted 1/13/2018

Autumn

Autumn is a 4 year old Black and Red female. She came from a Sacramento area shelter and was originally found as a stray with another male dog but not much is known about her past.

She met other large dogs nicely, but separated and on her own, she displays reserved curiosity and has rapidly learned to trust humans. She came to us with partial hair loss, presumably due to severe flea allergies, and has developed secondary warts along her back. The warts have been recently treated and should resolve in the next few weeks. With continued good nutrition and flea treatment, her coat will continue to fill in nicely.

Autumn is an affectionate girl who quickly learns the intimacy and routine of the home, settling in her beds with calm demeanor.

Fawkes Head

Adopted 1/13/2018

Fawkes

Fawkes is a black and tan male, about 10 months, weighing 75 lbs. He was a stray from a Sacramento area shelter, so nothing is known of his background. Fawkes is new to us, so more will be posted as we know him better.

So far, he has proven to be an energetic boy and still has a lot of puppy in him. He is learning house and leash manners, basic commands and being crate trained.

Fawkes enjoys other large dogs, but plays rough and likes to jump, so he may be too much for small dogs and young children.

Jeff Head

SENIOR

Adopted 1/13/2018

Jeff

Jeff (AKA Jeffery) is an amazingly sweet, handsome black and tan male German Shepherd who is a VERY young 10 years old, and weighs approximately 78 pounds. His previous owner surrendered him to a local area shelter, and very little is known of the reason for his surrender or his background.

Jeffery has easily blended into his foster home's pack of resident dogs which consists of 5 dogs that are a mix of ages and sexes, and has acted appropriately with all dogs, large and small, that he has met. While at a pet store, Jeffery met the resident cat and was not fazed by it and basically ignored it, while his foster pack was ready to snack on it. Based on this observation, we believe Jeffery could possibly be ok living with cats.

He is extremely calm, with a great temperament, has moderate energy and has impeccable house manners. After only a few days, he earned the privilege to roam freely in the house with his foster pack.

Lizzie Rae

Lizzie Rae is a 10 month old slender girl, who came into rescue as a stray found on the streets. A good Samaritan took her in and when her owner could not be located, she came into rescue. She lives with a small dog and is learning to live with cats.

Lizzie needs continued training on the leash and socialization, but is willing to learn, and is quick to give kisses out, even to strangers.

Suki Head
More

Adopted 1/13/2018

Suki

Suki is a 5 year old sable female German Shepherd who weighs 57 pounds. She was an owner surrender who was given up when the previous home could no longer afford her. She lived with other dogs in her previous home and had been kept outside. Her ears have fly strike from her being left outdoors too often, but they are already showing improvement. She has had at least one litter of pups in the past.

In the current foster home, Suki appears house trained, and behaves nicely indoors (with access to the back yard) when you are away. She has nice house manners, not jumping on any furniture. She prefers to be indoors lounging on her dog pillows. She walks nicely on a leash, only needing very soft corrections, and knows basic commands.

Buster Head

Adopted 1/6/2018

Buster

Buster is a 4.5 year old male black & tan German Shepherd with one floppy ear. He weighs about 89 lbs and is on a diet to lose a few pounds. He was originally adopted from GCGSR at the age of 18 months where he shared his home with another dog. He was recently relinquished because the owner will be moving and is unable to take him along. Despite this change, he has adapted rapidly to his new foster home, sharing his life with another GCGSR foster dog. He doesn't seem interested in playing with the other dog, as he prefers to be by his human.

Buster enjoys the presence and attention of all humans, and is comfortable in the presence of other dogs, both large and small. He will benefit from firm boundaries to prevent attachment to or claiming of his human.

Esther Head

Adopted 1/6/2018

Esther

Esther is a 9 year old sable female. She came from a Sacramento area shelter and we know little about her history. We were told that she belonged to a homeless person sometime in her past and became a favorite of one of the staff members at the shelter. Esther is a little on the heavy side, so she was fed well wherever she'd been.

This is one sweet, low energy girl. She appears housebroken, walks fairly well on a leash, and ignores the cats in her foster home. She met the other male German Shepherd in the foster home easily. More to follow as we get to know Esther better.
