WesleyWesley Head

Wesley is a very handsome juvenile, approximately 9-10 months old, that came to us terribly underweight at 56 lbs, and in poor shape with missing hair from demodex.

Wesley had not seen the inside of a home, and was desperate for both food and attention. With all that said, he has a tremendous temperament. Wesley needs someone with a true understanding of socializing, and he will mature into a sensationally handsome and well-rounded dog.

His great qualities: Once he learned to use a dog door, he has not had any further accidents in the house; he essentially trained himself the first night! This boy learns fast! He stays off the furniture. He gets along fabulously with all of the other dogs he has met so far, both male and female, young and old. He is non-dominant, and plays politely and respects boundaries set by the mature dogs.

Although severely underweight when he came to us, he has learned how to sit for his dinner, and wait politely while it is being prepared. He has learned how to get into and out of a vehicle to go for rides, but he hasn't yet discovered the joy of looking out the window. He already has a nice, solid big-boy bark, and will use it when there is a knock at the door, but respects when you tell him, "That's enough." He is not a "licky" dog, but likes to sit very close, put his paw on you and look straight up at you for affection; he is a cuddler!

Areas needing improvement: For all intents and purposes, he is still a big puppy, so he likes to chew on everything. He likes to bark sometimes when he plays with other dogs, and if he gets bored he will dig. He has not yet learned how to move out of the way when you are walking, so he can present a tripping hazard at the moment. He has not yet learned how to walk on a leash, and when he is uncertain, he lays in front of you, again presenting a tripping hazard. Most of these things he will outgrow or with proper training and leadership, can be corrected.

What Wesley needs: Someone who DOES NOT feel sorry for him, coddles him, or makes excuses for him because they believe he was abused. He was NOT! Someone who understands what it means to socialize a dog, and will commit to do that for him. Someone who can provide some basic training and confidence-building.

Unknown, how he is with cats, critters and small dogs.

With just a little time, training and patience, Wesley will be one of those once-in-a-lifetime, great dogs!

NOTE: Wesley is not quite ready for adoption yet since he hasn't been neutered, but he can go to a foster-to-adopt home!
