Athena May is a charming, 3-4 year old black and tan beauty, with a silky coat, soulful eyes, and the most beautifully expressive face. She has been in a foster home for a while waiting for a forever home, so we know a lot about her.
Athena is a house princess, housebroken and with great house manners. She knows basic commands and walks well on a leash. She has been an indoor dog in her foster home and does not need to be crated when left at home. She stays in the backyard when home alone longer than a couple hours. She gets along well with male dogs she knows, and is currently living with 3 smaller-sized male collies. Unfortunately they are older and don't like to play. She honors that, but would really appreciate living with another large dog who is up for the occasional chase and horseplay. Her foster home has a 35 lb, 11 year old collie (grouchy old male) who bosses her around and she is very submissive toward him. A prior owner had a lovebird and Athena was great with it, but she chases cats and squirrels off the property.
She was very reactive with unknown dogs when she first came into our program. With careful introductions, she gets along well with other dogs, and is learning to be non-reactive with strange dogs while on leash. She has moderate energy that builds up if she doesn't get a good walk, preferably daily. Athena is a strong-willed girl, and will regularly test boundaries, so strong leadership and consistency are necessary with her.
Athena needs an experienced owner who knows how to handle determined and reactive dogs, and will regularly exercise this girl and include her in their life. She blossoms once she has a dedicated owner that works with her. She might do well with another dog that will play with her in a game of chase or tug of war, but care will need to be taken that it's the right match.
No small cats or critters!
