DutchDutch Head

Dutch was an owner surrender to a Sacramento shelter. His previous owner had to relocate out of the country and couldn't take him along. This is an 85-90 lb male, who doesn't realize his size. We believe he is a Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix and is a nice carmel color with a flat coat that doesn't seem to shed as much as a shepherd. Dutch is outgoing, friendly and affectionate. The previous owner took Dutch to basic obedience class where he was trained in English & German. He does need more work walking on leash and will jump up on people, counters and furniture when excited. He seems to be housebroken, especially with the use of a dog door. Because of his size and his jumping up when excited, he should not go to a home with small children, although older children would be fine. He rides very well in the car and jumps in willingly. He is sleeping through the night in a crate that is filled with chew toys for him.

Dutch is living with two other male German Shepherds and learning to live with cats. The cats in the house are very dog savvy and Dutch seems to just want to check them out. He has gotten close enough to be swatted and didn't act defensively, however, unless the next household has very dog-savvy cats and the people know how to properly introduce and contain Dutch's energy, he might do better in a home without cats.

If you like to play ball, this boy is for you. Dutch loves to chase the ball and is getting better at dropping it upon return. He also loves to walk into the kiddy pool and will lay down in it to cool off. When at a home with a built-in pool, he only walked onto the steps and didn't venture off into the entire pool.

Due to his strong, athletic build, focus and energy, Dutch would probably due well as an agility dog or a dock diving dog. Dutch will alarm bark and is very alert to sounds and activity surrounding him. With continued training and lots of exercise, Dutch will be the best dog you can ever imagine.
