LancerLancer 2008 Head

Lancer was originally adopted out in 2008, and was recently discovered at the Modesto pound where he had been surrendered by his previous adopters after 4 years.

Lancer is a large, confident, 7 year old sable male. He is an affectionate boy who wants nothing more than to hang out with his family. He is friendly with everyone he meets, loves going for car rides, has great house manners, is crate-trained, and know his basic obedience commands.

He would be fine as an only dog, or with a female dog companion. He will try and dominate other male dogs, so he will need constant supervision in these instances, but corrects verbally provided he respects his handler. He will play fetch, and enjoys wading in the water.

This is a Level 3 Dog and will only go to a true Level 3 home. Please be sure you understand what this Level of dog requires.

Original bio & pictures, April 2008

Lancer is a very large, handsome, young adult sable male, still on the thin side. He will be gorgeous and elegant when he fills out to his full weight around 90 pounds, and his coat gets some sheen to it. Now that we know him better, he appears to be younger than we first thought, around 3-4 years old. He was an unclaimed stray from Merced.

He is a friendly, outgoing fellow with people, calm and confident. He's good when meeting other dogs but is most definitely an alpha German Shepherd male. He'll need experienced introductions to other confident dogs. He can get along with other dogs but he does not want a play buddy. His idea of a good time is to find the biggest jolly-ball in the yard to entice his human to play kick-ball with him. He loves to carry around balls, or chew on big rawhides and dog bones. He's not destructive, he appears to be used to staying by himself a lot.

This big boy is comfortable inside a home but needs a brush-up on his house manners and reminders not to get into things or up on furniture. He hasn't made any mistakes in the house and appears to be housebroken. He does have some leash manners, but definitely needs obedience training and firm leadership. He's smart enough to have figured out how to ignore people who aren't confident leaders.

Lancer is looking for a home with someone experienced at handling big, confident male German Shepherds.  He's too big and confident for a home with small children, so needs a home with all adult-sized humans. With the right training, he'll make an awesome companion.

Unknown how he is with cats or other animals.

This is a Level 3 Dog and will only go to a true Level 3 home.
