SprocketSprocket Head

Sprocket was left at the shelter when his owners decided they did not have enough room or time for him. At one year old, he is a sweet, affectionate, energetic, and happy adolescent puppy, though nearly full size at 70 pounds. He is working nicely on learning basic manners and pet skills.

Sprocket loves human contact, and seems to think that if he just crawls into your lap enough times, you will realize that you actually do want a 70 lb lap dog. During a good tummy rub or chest scratch, he zones out and enjoys the bliss. The more attention he gets, the calmer he is. He has some puppy habits like being mouthy, but is realizing that a respectful sit gets him more attention than grabbing hands. He learns quickly, and after just a few days in his foster home is nearly done with counter surfing and getting on furniture. He sits nicely, and is doing well learning heel and other basics. He can be pushy, and will require an owner who is able to give consistent and clear but calm authority. When he is unsure or does not want to do something, he will flatten on the floor. Though he is usually on his foster human like a shadow, he does not like to come when called if farther away.

Sprocket still has a puppy's curiosity, and you are likely to find his head in between your hand and whatever you are reaching for. A half-on sock is an invitation to tug-of-war, but he corrects easily. At his age, Sprocket is still very interested in chewing, but with a good supply of toys and old bones, has mostly left household objects alone so far. His previous owners reported that he likes to dig, but he has done no digging in his foster home, being occupied with exercise, human affection, toys and other dogs to play with. He settles well in the evenings at home with chew toys and bones. Outdoors, he prefers the larger toys, such as the Jolly Ball. He likes to chase a tennis ball, but hasn't learned to return it yet. He is going to work with his foster dad, and rests quietly when the keyboard is clicking.

Introduced properly, Sprocket loves people and has enjoyed everyone he has met. However, when a stranger approaches abruptly, he will bark protectively. His previous owners reported that he was excessively protective, but so far he has not shown this. He has not nuisance barked at squirrels, birds, neighbor noises, and other normal backyard distractions.

Sprocket sleeps quietly in a crate, and rides nicely in the car, though just learning to load up instead of being lifted in. He does well with other dogs provided they enjoy high contact, very physical play. He is getting along well with his three German Shepherd foster siblings, learning basic pack manners, e.g. that young guys can't just go knock over an alpha male, and learning to share a human with other dogs. He is living with two cats in his foster home, is very curious about them and will chase if they run, but respects a hiss and swat. With time, he could probably learn to live well with cats, but will need continued training and supervision on this.

Sprocket is a happy, energetic and smart kid looking for a loving, active home that can continue his training and provide the affection and activity that he wants and needs. With this, he will become a wonderful pet.
